The Lucy Jean Mofield Memorial Scholarship is a non-profit organization wholeheartedly committed to helping college bound students in financial need succeed by means of scholarship awards.  The 501 (c) (3) corporation was formed on February 29, 2016.  The scholarship was created in honor of Lucy Jean Mofield, who passed away suddenly at an age too young.

The very first scholarship was awarded on May 10, 2016 to April Collins, a Midland High School Senior in Pleasant Plains, Arkanasas, where Lucy lived for over thirty years and raised her four children. Our goal is to offer a renewable scholarship (for up to four years), and to eventually award the scholarship at schools in many areas like Batesville, Arkansas; DFW, Texas; and Owensville, Missouri (where she was born and raised).  For the past two years, two Scholarships were awarded annually! A total of $8,000 in scholarships have been awarded to outstanding students.

We host an annual 5K event called the Lucy Jean Turkey Trot in honor of her.  The goal of the 5K is to raise funds for the memorial scholarship. The 6th annual 5K will be on November 7th, 2020 in Mansfield, Texas.

About Lucy

Lucy Jean ("Jeanie") Mofield was born Lucy Jean Skornia in Owensville, Missouri on March 30, 1955.  She loved her family, friends, animals, and life itself.  She truly made the best of each day and appreciated the small, precious things in life. She proudly raised her four children, and also loved animals like family.  In 2012, she was thrilled when she became a "goat grandma" to two kids!  Animals and nature topped the list of her favorite things!

In June 2015, she moved to Guthrie, OK to be closer to her daughter. She was excited to begin a new adventure in a new place. She suddenly fell ill after the move. We were all shocked when she passed away on June 23, 2015 due to a tick-born illness. Ehrlichiosis is a bacterial disease spread by the lone star tick.  Flu like symptoms are likely: fever, fatigue, and muscle aches within 1-2 weeks of a bite.  Please see a doctor immediately if you have these symptoms and have had a recent tick bite.  It has to be diagnosed based on symptoms, as sometimes it's too late to wait for test results.  Doxycycline is the antibiotic used to treat Ehrlichiosis. Although the doctors were certain she contracted the disease, it normally isn't fatal.  We suspect there were other underlying issues that contributed to the loss of her life; possibly drug resistant bacteria from long term antibiotic use that reduced the effectiveness of treatment of her disease. Her loved ones are still in shock and disbelief that she is gone.

Lucy was such a loving person.  She was a wonderful Mom to her four children, and a Mom to many in the community.  Lucy loved to have fun, laugh, and be active.  She enjoyed fall weather the most, and many walks in the country.  The Lucy Jean Turkey Trot and the Scholarship would definitely make her smile.  She is forever missed and loved by so many.  Let’s keep her fun and wild spirit alive and instill joy in all.

This scholarship was made possible by the many generous individual donations and all the funds raised from participants of the Lucy Jean Turkey Trot.  We graciously thank everyone for the help and support.

Our goal is to raise more funds so that we can offer a renewable scholarship, renewable up to four years upon satisfactory GPA and enrollment.  We also would like to award the scholarship at other schools such as in Dallas, Texas (where her daughter Christine Mofield resides) and Owensville, Missouri (where she was born and raised).
